Fertile Terraces, Syctom
Located in Romainville, the Syctom sorting center receives selective collections from 16 municipalities and is currently the largest facility of its kind in Île-de-France, with an annual capacity of 53,000 tons. Waste is sorted by material type and then directed to appropriate recycling channels.
As part of the competition, we proposed installing a market gardening farm on the roof, utilizing compost derived from the waste to support local agricultural production within a short supply chain.
A Strategic Facility
The Romainville multi-stream center is the first high-capacity center created in France. It combines three entities:
– a selective waste sorting center,
– a residual household waste transfer center,
– a waste disposal site.
Modernized in 2015, the sorting center is now adapted to the expanded sorting instructions covering all plastic packaging and small metals.
A Site in Transition
Apart from the renovated sorting center, the rest of the existing installations are aging. Their reconstruction is necessary to meet the growing needs of the territories, new waste treatment regulations, and to enable better integration into an urban fabric undergoing significant transformation.
A Project with Multiple Stakes
The reconstruction of the center aims to:
– Maintain a local facility for waste reception from the Romainville watershed,
– Comply with regulatory changes on packaging and bio-waste sorting,
– Strengthen the facility’s territorial anchoring within the Syctom network.
Key Features of the Future Center
– River transport to reduce the number of trucks on roads,
– New sorting and transfer capacities, including food waste,
– A center of excellence for the circular economy, integrating a waste disposal site and a reuse center in cooperation with Est Ensemble and the cities of Romainville and Bobigny,
– Environmental and architectural exemplarity, asserting a strong ambition for the metropolis of tomorrow.
