Rehabilitation of a Normandy coastal farm

Near Caen, the Château de Fontaine-Henry farm testifies to the history of Norman coastal farms. Around the old village, made of stone houses and traditional roofs, have been grafted over time, residential neighborhoods linked to metropolitanization.
Today, at the time of energy transitions, the question arises of the future of this exceptional rural heritage: how to preserve and transmit it as part of a family housing project?

Intentions of the project owner

The client wishes to renovate the north building of the farm, including the main residence and its annexes, in order to ensure its transmission and sustainability in a family setting.
The project integrates current energy requirements: installation of bio-based interior insulation, renovation of facades and installation of a heat pump for the entire building.

Preserve a rural heritage

In a context of progressive transformation of the countryside, the rehabilitation of the Fontaine-Henry farm is part of a logic of conservation and enhancement of an existing rural heritage, which will continue to welcome family life.

Living differently in the countryside

At a time of ecological, social and climate crises, this project aims to show that it is possible to live in rurality in a different way: by respecting resources, reinvesting the existing and anchoring itself in the territory. It is an approach of sobriety and responsibility, without extension or additional artificialization of the soils.

A morphology favorable to renovation

The very architecture of the farm makes this renovation possible:
-A perennial construction in sustainable local materials (stone, wood, lime or earth plasters);
-A well-oriented location, with a protected courtyard and openings to the south;
-A built-in thickness of about 7 m, offering comfort and adaptability.

A private project, focused on the future

The redevelopment of the Fontaine-Henry farm is above all a family and private project. It is a matter of restoring a built whole carrying memory, transmitting it in good conditions to future generations and maintaining a quality of life in connection with its rural environment.
